They played around for hours to answer the compatibility questions which might go through your mind, with pictures support for the lazy ones who hate to read ;)

Batteries and Lights

As it has been said and written everywhere already, the new Gameboy Advance SP comes with built-in Li-ion battery and front light. The bad surprises

Two items which are supposed to be plugged into the Gameboy Advance cartdridge port to work properly brought us some disappointments. Their complete design is made in such a way that it cannot fit completely (just a few millimeters missing there...) with the new slot (the thin plastic case is longer and the cartdridge adapters we are talking about, have angles). The two products in question are the innovative GBA Mini Camera and GBA TV Tuner NTSC (and of course PAL as our test Gameboy Advance SP was NTSC version)

Each individual peripheral product page will be updated with either 'compatible Gameboy Advance SP' or 'not suitable with Gameboy Advance SP' within the next 24 hours.

After we have talked with their manufacturing partners, we can confirm that some specific accessories for Gameboy Advance SP are already in progress and could be released, for some of them as early as end of february or beginning of march!

As a side note: we are receiving tons of comments for the previous news post and we would like to answer some small questions we have been reading around: we lost only one single screw in the process and when re-assembling the unit, it worked perfectly. We needed three different screwdrivers to perform the trick :)

X2:LITE final design http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=5
Since posting our first picture of the X2:LITE final design we've been inundated with enquiries asking what the various sockets and jumpers were for, and why we chose these particular designs. Hopefully we have answered all of your questions below.

A: This socket is for two wires. Ground and the d0 onboard flash disable point. Only 1 wire needs to be soldered here as the ground point will be a screw on clip. The reason these two wires are on a separate socket is so if you connected to the board via the PIN HEADER ADAPTER (B) you would never need to solder ever again - you simple unplug. The female pins will also be included in the package.

B: This is the PIN HEADER Block. We decided to put this onto the PCB instead of a separate adapter for a number of reasons. First of course is cost. By doing this a separate adapter does not need to be manufactured and it comes as standard. You don't have to use it but at least you get the option. Using the PIN header is what we absolutely recommend. It is a far better solution than no solder pogo pins or wires. Its stable, quick and easy to install, the mod can be removed with ease and replaced in seconds. No alignment, no setting up. The main benefit is that once your pin header is fitted you NEVER need to solder ANY mod into your XBOX ever again! . It's not just for Xecuter - its a design that should be encouraged with all LPC mods. In hind sight we feel that we should have implemented this design with Xecuter1, but that is what R&D is all about. Processing feedback, listening to customers and delivering what they ask for. We believe this is it. If other mod developers simply follow the path of using the same adapters, then only the customer benefits - they never have to worry about compatibility again.

C: This is the connector if you wish to use the wires adapter (supplied). Can also be used to connect to the pogo pin adapter - or any adapter design. We encourage third party designers to step forward and design their own addons. As long as its a good idea and good quality then we're happy :)

D: This is the 512k Bank selector. The mod is designed to read 2 x different 512k BIOS's. This can include 2x256k or simply 1 x 512k per bank (The 2x256k will simply read as one mirrored BIOS - it is not for two different ones). Again you can add an external switch if you wish.

E: This is the mod disable jumper. The first thing we hear is that its not the best adapter to use - why not use DIP switches. The answer is simple - we want to make this as easy to use as possible. The jumper pins are not only for jumpers, but you can also add your own NON SOLDER external switch. Now can you see why we used these ? :)

F: This is the Flash Protect jumper. A bit silly of us not to have added this in the beginning, so thanks to those that reminded us :) This is to protect the mod from any malicious erase or flash attempt. Again you can add an external switch if you wish.

One final note is this. It has been of some concern that if you programmed the mod with the wrong flash, or you made a mistake that it would kill the mod. Yes this is true but this is why its called LITE with less features and a much cheaper price. Most of you won't attempt to flash this anyway, and you should always be careful when doing so. However, we are designing an addon cable that will simply plug into the PIN HEADER BLOCK (B) where you can program from your PC much similar to the PRO version. This will not be available yet and will not be supplied with the mods. This will be an add-on cable (which we will probably release as HOMEBREW for free - similar version of cheap lpc but designed for 1MB flash) for those that have had an accident. I hope this makes some of you happy :)

No doubt this has answered a lot of your questions and hope we've been as clear as possible.
Xecuter2 Pogo PRO Final Pics http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=6
We also have some pics for you of the X2:PRO kit that is being shipped out. Note the jumper is for Flash Protection.

Gameboy Player & Hori Digital Controllers released. Two versions were released on Saturday the 13th December in Japan, one with 160GB hard drive (PSX DESR-5000), and one with 250GB hard drive (PSX DESR-7000).

While the PSX does not come with a Dual Shock controller, a PSX compatible controller is available separately. An all new remote control is also included. The remote control, which is incompatible with the standard PS2, features the standard PlayStation brand "shape" buttons along with a button that allows you to instantly stop a game. You'll also be able to control recording and playback via the Dual Shock using on-screen menus that allow for quick access to recorded programs, pictures and games, as well as video editing features.

While Sony suggests that the PSX controller may not be compatible with the Playstation One or Playstation 2, we tested using the PSX controller on a PS2 console and vice-versa and it worked fine with Guitar Freaks 4 and Winning Eleven 6. We opened the controllers and while there are some differences in the design, they seem to be compatible. Also while some websites were reporting that the PSX comes with a USB2.0 port, it is in fact only USB 1.1.

Recording is compatible with the DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. Initially, the system will not support recording to the DVD+RW format, but future upgrades downloadable via the system's network adapter, are expected to add this support. Users will be able to dub between DVDs at a rate of 12x.

In order to release the PSX before the end of year Sony have dropped a number of features from the console which were originally announce. Features that were originally announced but are not available on release include:

MP3 Playback support - Sony currently uses ATRAC, similar to their Minidisc format instead of MP3 format

BB Navigator - The BB Navigator software is not included and incompatible with the PSX. You can still access online games however using the included network adapter but cannot access games channels.

DVD dubbing at 24X - This has now been changed to 12X for recording from HDD to DVD. DVD+R/RW support is also not included in the initial release.

Sony has promised that all of these features should be available early next year once testing is complete and existing users will be able to update the PSX using the included Ethernet adapter.

A complete list of the final specifications is listed below:

<TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=5 width="60%" So do many with playing a First-Person Shooter with a Controller. Some might not understand the point in using a mouse and a keyboard with a console, others would make some ridiculous claim like "I'd rather have my hands cut off with a rusty axe than play an FPS with a joypad".

But in the end, using a keyboard and a mouse, completely changes the way the game is played. Use of the mouse takes away the need to concentrate on aiming and leaves you free to concentrate on pure tactics. Also, the speed of the mouse opens up new tactics which are not available with a pad.

About SmartJoy????? - Approved by Gamers Worldwide

The original SmartJoy????? Adapter appeared in 1999 and was the very first Dual Shock????? to USB adapter. It satisfied thousands of gamers worldwide, even though it wasn't perfect: for example, rumble was not supported, and the driver did not allow you to press left and right at the same time (nowadays required by for dancing games). Several years later, by the time of writing this, SmartJoy????? is the most innovative developer for what they call advanced game adapters. SmartJoy????? products let you play your PC stuff with PlayStation?????2, Xbox????? or even Super Nintendo????? joypads and joysticks - and now your Xbox????? and PS2????? titles with Keyboard and Mouse.

The SmartJoy????? project was started two years ago, with the intention to drive the whole concept to a new level. After launching Smartjoy-X (world's first Xbox????? to USB controller adapter) in early 2003, SmartJoy PLUS (The Ultimate PS2????? compatible USB Adapter) right in time for PC based dance applications, and Super SmartJoy????? (compatible with SNES9x, ZSNES, MAME, etc) after many emu fans asked for a decent way of playing their classics, the new SmartJoy????? FRAG????? marks the next big step on the projects road map. The next useful advanced game adapters are already in development, these guys just can't stop.

Highest Ratings

Because they are developed with usability and pure gameplay in mind, original SmartJoy Adapters are usually rated 5 stars by Consoles & Gadgets customers (SmartJoy PLUS great reviews by the time of writing this, Super Smartjoy great reviews, SmartJoy X great reviews).

GBA SP Memory Stick http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=15

The Super Memory Stick (SMS) is a fairly new device which allows you to backup your GBA game saves. The SMS contains either 4Mb or 8Mb of flash memory and is much like the USB Memory sticks on your PC. The length of the SMS is approx two and a quarter inches so its small enough to fit in your pocket, keyring or GBA case. Included in the package is the SMS and a wrist strap, no extra software is required to be installed as this is all contained on the SMS. A simple manual is printed on the back of the packaging.

The SMS is compatible with all types of saves, these include 4Kb/64Kb EEPROM, 256Kb SRAM and 512Kb/1Mb Flash. It is also compatible with both the GBA and GBA SP.

Using the SMS is very easy. You simply connect the SMS to the EXT port on your GBA/SP and insert the game cartridge into the GBA/SP as normal. When you switch on the GBA/SP you hold SELECT+START to initiate the multiboot and after a few seconds the SMS will load the software onto your GBA.

You are then presented with a menu with five options (see screenshots at bottom of this page), these are:

1. Format SMS - This will format the SMS
5. Run Game in Cartridge - This will start the game on the currently inserted cartridge.

GBA Memory Stick is really small

Everything on the menus is straightforward to use and I had no problems backing up/restoring/deleting/copying saves without checking the guide on the back of packaging. It does exactly what its supposed to do with no problems.

It takes just a few seconds to back up/restore a save to/from the SMS and GBA as the saves are fairly small and also the SMS uses fast Flash memory.

This would have been a short review unless some people asked some questions on the forum. So as part of the review I have answered most of these to give a better judgment of the capabilities of the SMS.

First is compatibility with Flash Cartridges. Unfortunately the SMS isn't fully compatible with these, if you have a multiboot cartridge (more than one game on it) the SMS will only recognise the first save. It works fine on a single game though. This should easily be fixed with a newer software update.

The SMS can be upgraded with new software, no details on how this is done are available at the moment but my guess is that this will be done via a Flash Cartridge and an upgrade ROM. There are plans to update the software to support more features at a later date. Again, my guess is that the very cheap price for the SMS means non Flash Cartridge owners will just buy a newer SMS.

Compatibility with programs using non standard saves. I tried a few homegrown games which use non standard save methods and they worked fine. This looks to be the way the SMS acts when reading the cartridge, it just reads whatever is in the save memory. So while it may not be efficient (it sometimes just defaults to 64Kb size when it may only be 8Kb size) it should work no problems.

I tried PocketNES and the SMS found the save size as 64Kb. It says on the SMS packaging that it supports up to 1Mb Flash Saves so my guess is that if PocketNES uses larger than 64Kb it *should* work. I copied the backed up save to another cart and the save worked fine (probably same reason as above with the non standard saves).

I unfortunately couldn't try PogoShell because I don't have any older Flash cartridges to hand at the moment (I used an EZ2 for this review). My guess is that it will see the save as 64Kb size because of the way PogoShell's save management works. This is untested but it should be possible to back up all of the saves due to the save management of PogoShell. This is done by loading a game in pogoshell so that its save bank is in the first memory block, switch off the GBA/SP and then you then back up this save as normal. If you want to back up another save then you simply load the respective game again, switch off GBA/SP and back up the save. Again, this is untested but *should* work.

Number of saves you can fit on the SMS depends on the size of the saves. The SMS uses 'blocks' as its reference of storage. The 4M version has 1899 blocks and the 8M version has 3798 blocks. A 64Kb save will require approx. 249 blocks so you can fit around seven 64Kb saves on the 4M version, on the 8M version around fifteen saves.

Conclusion:
The SMS is a nice device, it will probably appeal more to non flash cartridge owners as they can back up their saves for a very cheap price. The SMS retails for under ?????10 so its a very cheap buy if you are looking for a way to back up your saves, its also cheap enough to buy as gifts for friends and what with Christmas around the corner it makes an ideal gift. My only fault with the SMS is not being fully compatible with Multiboot Flash Cartridges, hopefully this will be support in future updates/version.

I give the SMS a big thumbs up, if you want a score then its 9 out of 10.

UK bans PlayStation 'chipping' http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=16 The selling of "mod chips" for Sony PlayStation 2 game consoles has been ruled illegal by a UK high court.
A PlayStation 2 with a modified chip installed can play imported or pirated copies of the console's video games.
Mr Justice Laddie backed Sony's legal argument that its intellectual property was being infringed by people selling the chips to console owners.
The ruling is thought to be one of the first brought under a controversial European Union directive on copyright.
Sony brought its case against a man called David Ball who was accused of selling about 1,500 "Messiah" mod chips.
In the High Court, Mr Justice Laddie ruled that Mr Ball was acting illegally in selling the chips which get around the built-in copy protection system on Sony's console.
As well as declaring the sale of the mod chips illegal, Mr Laddie said that the use, advertising or possession of them for commercial purposes should be considered illegal too.
Thrown out
Sony brought the case under the EU Copyright Directive which was enacted in the UK in October 2003.
Under that directive, it is illegal to circumvent copy protection systems. But some cyber-liberties advocates claim that such laws only enshrine existing monopolies.
They say that neither professional criminals nor technically savvy users will be deterred by such legislation.
The ruling is not the first victory Sony has won against makers of mod chips. In Belgium it also won a similar case against another mod chip seller.
However, in Italy a judge threw out Sony's case saying it was up to owners of a console what they did with it.
Similarly in Spain, mod chips are seen as legal despite the EU copyright legislation.

Seems you can kill your ps2 but not put a chip in it.

Let us know your views
Xbox Video Chat hits Japan November 25 http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=17 Microsoft announced today that it will release Xbox Video Chat in Japan on November 25. Shipping will be definitely cheaper and the system will be easier to hide in a suitcase or backpack when going through customs ;-)

Here are the pictures of the new model that will be released worldwide in November:

Here are the unofficial pictures received by one of our visitors:

Here is a copy of the original press release by Sony:

TOKYO, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI)
announced today its plans for the global release of a new, redesigned
PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system (SCPH-70000 CB) in time for the
year-end peak-selling season. The new model will be in stores on November 3
in Japan, and by November 1 in Europe and North America.

While inheriting the basic functions and design philosophy of the current
PlayStation 2 (SCPH-50000), the internal design architecture of the new model
has been completely overhauled, resulting in a slimmer and more lightweight
form. Internal volume has been reduced by 75 percent, overall weight has been
halved, and thickness trimmed down to 2.8 cm (thickness of current model is
7.8 cm). Its size is almost as small as a hardcover book, making it easier to
carry around and enjoy games and DVD videos anytime, anywhere.
Equipped with an integrated Ethernet port for network gaming, the new
PlayStation 2 sets new standards in the fusion of design and functionality and
will enable the company to maintain market momentum as it expands its online
console gaming community, the largest in North America with more than
1.4 million users. Approximately 40 percent (*1) of North American
PlayStation 2 online gamers use dial-up connections and to satisfy this base,
the North American model is equipped with both Ethernet and modem ports.
During the year-end peak-selling season about 80 online game titles are
expected to be available in Japan, with 120 titles and 65 titles respectively
in North America and Europe. With the launch of the new network-ready(*2)
PlayStation 2, the company expects to continually expand the world of online
gaming in this generation.
"The introduction of the new PlayStation 2 is part of our long-term vision
for the platform," said Jack Tretton, executive vice president, Sony Computer
Entertainment America. "We are pleased to bring the sleek, redesigned product
to market in time for the holiday season, and expect consumer enthusiasm for
the new model to translate into robust sales. As the market leader, with an
existing installed base of more than 27 million PlayStation 2 units in North
America alone, we will continue to provide solutions that expand our consumer
base and grow the category as a whole."
Gaining an overwhelming support from a wide range of users from all over
the world, more than 72 million units of PlayStation 2 have been shipped as of
today. Strongly supported by software developers and publishers, PlayStation
2 is indisputably the most popular computer entertainment system in the world
and the new design will position it for even greater success over the next
half of its life.

(*1) According to SCEI's DNAS (Dynamic Network Authentication System)
data.

(*2) Internet Service Provider and appropriate Internet access (e.g. ADSL,
cable, fiber, etc.) required. The unit is normally only available through Nintendo's online store in Japan, and comes with Japanese display, instructions and software. Unfortunately, Nintendo had to call back the first batch of units in Japan, due to a technical problem with the sound output.

Consolesandgadgets now has the newly released units in stock and we took some extra time to compare it with the other available movie players, give it a try from the non-Japanese user perspective, and point out what's good and not good about it.

Play-Yan vs. The Rest

As you might know, Nintendo's latest addition to the accessories market is not the first movie player for handheld systems. The officially Nintendo licensed and Smart Media Card based AM3 Player was a big disappointment and failed to impress international and Japanese users when it was released. The unit started off with a couple of Detective Conan cartoons for more than 18 months ago, and in the meantime they have a hand full more including Pokemon. Unfortunately it doesn't let you create or convert your own content, and if you are not a big fan of Detective Conan or Pokemon (and you are not near one of the Kiosks in Tokyo to download stuff), it is basically useless to you.

Majesco Inc in America went another way with their "movie players". They released 24 movies so far, in the shape of standard GBA cartridges , which are available in US retail chains. Unfortunately, this was invented for parents who want to keep their kids quiet on the backseat of a car, not for multi media applications and people who want to watch their own content on the go.

Nintendo Play-Yan

Unlike one might believe, the Play-Yan was not released by Nintendo to compete with the MPEG4 capabilities of the Sony PSP. Ken Toyoda, PR head of Nintendo, also confirmed that the Play-Yan was designed for the Gameboy Advance and that it works with the Nintendo DS is a coincidence. The fact that Nintendo announced the Play-Yan just a week after the Sony PSP was released does not relate, according to Toyoda. Don't take this wrong, the Play-Yan and any other movie players for the GBA or NDS are great devices on their own, but comparing it with the huge and expensive display of the Sony PSP, with its Universal Media Disc, the Memory Stick which is accessible through USB2, and many other multi media capabilities, is simply impossible. It's two different things for two different applications and different uses.

The GBA/NDS Movie Player

The only item that you can really compare the Play-Yan with is the Compact Flash Card based GBA Movie Player. While the GBA Movie Players was originally not designed for the Nintendo DS, it is 100% compatible, and does exactly the same as the Play-Yan: it works in the GBA mode of the Nintendo DS. Both devices, Play-Yan and GBA Movie Player, don't make use of the Nintendo DS capabilities and are native Gameboy Advance units. We will compare these two from the technical standpoint and the usefulness standpoint.

Play-Yan

GBA Movie Player

Release

March 2005

September 2004

Compatible

GBA SP, NDS

GBA, GBA SP, NDS

Media Type

SD Card

Compact Flash

Video Format

SD-VIDEO (ASF)

GBM

Sound Format

MP3

GBS

Software

MediaStage

Media Converter

Language

Japanese

English

Mini-Games

Yes

Yes

Firmware Upgradeable

No

Yes

Image Viewer

No

Yes

E-Books

No

Yes

Demo CD w/ Movies

No

Yes

Direct Headphone

Yes

No

Price

$79.90

$24.90

Using the GBA Movie Player

As you can see above, the GBA Movie Player which is way cheaper than the Play-Yan. , you receive a player that comes with English instructions, English Windows Software, and a demo CD with some trailers and other demo movies. Knowing they were onto a winner with the new Gameboy, sales were predicted to hit around 25 million in three years. An impressive goal, although even that was an underestimation for the success of the console. Along with topping all sale expectations, back in the late 80s, who would have thought we'd still be playing on a Gameboy in the year 2005? Although obviously a more powerful edition than the original, Gameboy Advance titles are still in 2D, and aside from the addition of two shoulder buttons, still retain the controls of the original Gameboy, or even further back, the original Famicom.

Now, a few days before its Japanese release date, we have the next evolution of Gameboy, the Gameboy Micro. With interchangeable face plates, the console comes in black, blue, purple, silver, and Famicom color. The Famicom edition is of course a Japan special, and the back is adorned with the Mario 20th Anniversary logo. Being a tiny 10 cm (4") by 5 cm (2"), and a stunning 1.7 cm (.7") thin, the Gameboy Micro is around the same size as an iPod Mini, but just two thirds of the weight. This is something that you can just slip into the pocket of your jeans, and at under 80 grams (2.8 ounces), it's half the weight of a GBA SP, or just for a fun comparison, 1/5 the weight of the original Gameboy.

Celebrating the release of the Gameboy Micro and Mario's 20th Anniversary, Nintendo are currently running TV commercials across Japan:

Further comparing it to the Gameboy Advance SP, the units 5 cm (2") screen has adjustable controls that go far brighter and display colors much more vividly than in the past, and as such Nintendo claims this is best looking Gameboy screen ever, more akin to that of the NDS. While the size is reduced to match the machine, because the resolution remains the same, your games should look even clearer. Heading under the hood, there's the usual GBA processor, with a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and much to the rejoicing of fans, a standard headphone port. Nintendo have also stated that all of the GBA's 700+ titles will run just fine.

As for the 'hood' itself, like a cell phone, the Gameboy Micro features removable and customizable face plates. Beyond the many available with the consoles launch, more choices will continue to flood in for ever after, ensuring your console always looks unique. Upon powering on the system too, the start and select buttons glow a cool blue, and all buttons along with the d-pad have been re-designed with a much softer feel than that of the GBA SP. So not only does the Gameboy Micro look good, but it feels good too.

All those who pre-ordered the Gameboy Micro can rest easy knowing yours are already on the way, but for everyone else, new orders are welcome anytime. The adapter was not just a plug-and-play type device, it had to be installed inside the GBA, by adding a second flat ribbon cable to the original GBA LCD display. Furthermore, the case of the GBA had to be replaced with a new one, that now had the new TV out ports on it.

Another accessories developer is now following their path, and announced a TV Adapter that connects the PSP to your beloved TV. The TV Adapter Kit for PSP (PSP2TV) lets you hook up your PSP to your home television (NTSC and PAL) via Composite or S-Video and Stereo connectors. It also lets you connect and use a PS2 controller on your PSP. By supporting a 16:9 and a 4:3 screen mode, it promises to keep the PSP's screen proportions as realistic as possible.

Unfortunately, the installation requires you to open and modify your PSP console, and you need to replace the front face plate with a new one. This TV Adapter is recommended only for advanced D.I.Y. technicians, and installing the kit will definitely void your warranty.

If you prefer to play your PSP games on the big screen, handling a screwdriver and opening your PSP doesn't make you afraid, you can now pre-order the TV Adapter for approx 99.99. According to the manufacturer, the item will be released before end of October.

Important:

Please note that Consoles and Gadgets will publish installation instructions as soon as the developers make them available. If one of these was either on your Santa wish-list or in your recent Internet searches, you've been waiting long enough for this! The LCD TopGun for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC is coming to the rescue as it fits with just all the needs described above, running on any screen or television set you can imagine, old or new. Hell, it even is supposed to work with a wall projector or with the upcoming SED technology from Toshiba!

Initial Set-up

Connecting the LCD TopGun to your console necessitates a couple of steps:

1. Plug the controller cable to your first Xbox joypad slot or the USB cable into your PC/PS2
2. Plug either the USB cable or the second controller cable into a separate socket to collect power
3. Connect the cable with the LED bars
4. Place the LED bars at the left and right sides of your screen/monitor
5. Make sure the switch under the gun is on X if you play on Xbox or on P otherwise

Alternatively both the LED bars and the gun itself can be connected to an external power supply rather than being all tied up all together (for step 2 and 3 hereabove).

Note that the LED bars can be placed to the left and right either hanging from the angles, thanks to two little pieces of plastic supplied with the LCD TopGun for this purpose, or, they can be sticked with scotch tape to make sure that they are exactly where you want them to be and that they won't move away from their position. There is also a keyhole on the top of each LED bar, making it possible to use screws for the disposal. Make sure the LED bar with the red "on/off" light goes to the right. The IR receiver in the gun will calculate its position thanks to the LED (Light Emitting Diode) infra-red rows located on the stands.

The first thing you ought to take care of, when you play with the LCD TopGun, is the calibration. Press A+B for 3 seconds, until your laser ray is ON all the time and everywhere, including completely outside of the TV screen. Target the LED bar at the top left of the screen, then the center of the screen, followed by the left-up, right-up, right-down and left-down corners of your screen. This defines your playing surface. If you somehow messed something up while calibration, press START+SELECT to get out and start again by holding the A and B buttons again.

Please note that you should stand at a given distance from the screen, the reference point being 2 Meters for a 29 inches screen. Changing the distance will affect precision greatly. Stepping to the side, holding the gun upside down or sideways won't. If you experience problems aiming at the corners, it might be that the actual game area is larger or smaller than the TV display. If you aim at the four corners of your TV screen during the calibration instead of aiming at the four corners of the actual in-game screen, you will experience problems when aiming away from the center. To solve this problem, please aim at the four corners of the actual in-game screen during the calibration.

Xbox and PlayStation 2 Impressions

We tried the LCD TopGun with The House of the Dead III on the Xbox and with Time Crisis 3 on the PlayStation 2, to get a feeling of how it performs.

Compared to the GunCon 2, it comes slightly under par. Extremely close in accuracy, it still is a tiny bit off the mark (by millimeters really) compared to the legendary Namco weapon, but it's nearly there and we definitely got ourselves a fair fight. That's of course on a TV screen that would be compatible with both guns, as the LCD TopGun works on all these sets that would earlier just not recognize the GunCon 2 or any other gun for that matter. The truth of the matter is that the previous generation of lightguns stopped working when the 100 Hertz norm came out and it just got worse ever since. In our gaming room, the LCD TopGun has been enjoyed flawlessly on Plasma, on LCD and on DLP Television sets, on which there is simply no reference point to compare with.

When giving it a go on the Xbox, the rendering is about the same, except that the competition is much weaker on the MS system. As a matter of fact, most lightguns released for the Xbox in the past had some accuracy problems that seem to be caused by software discrepancies. The LCD TopGun is about the same precision on Xboxen as on PS2s, which means close from Guncon 2, and loads better than any other third-party effort so far, since it uses another technical approach, no longer relying on software at all. It definitely gets the job done. And here again, it works with all screens you can think of, unlike the aforementioned competing equipment.

As said in the first section of this article, the LCD opGun comes with a laser beam that is useful for calibration but that can also be turned on or off during gameplay. This might help you with your aiming but can sometimes be disturbing: if you are the violent kind, like some of us here, you'll be moving your piece fast and harsh in no time, sometimes with both hands attached to it, and you might shake the laser off the center in the process. There are two dialers to point your laser beam optimally, one going from right to left and the other from top to bottom. They are both located on the gun itself, touching or hitting them while shooting at the screen is what will provoke problems. Either calm down, or, like I did, switch off the laser, it's for cheaters anyway ;)

Also, the LCD TopGun offers a Turbo feature that allows you to shoot rifle salves without sweat. Just put the Turbo on and the LCD TopGun will keep firing as long as you keep holding the trigger. No more click-click, clack-clack. Just focus on pointing at the enemies and finish the damn game that's been lowering your self-esteem for so long already.

The LCD TopGun also offers a kickback feature. That means the top part of the gun will keep going backwards with noise, everytime you fire it, similar to what you would experience with a real-deal Beretta (the kind that comes with bullets and kills people, you know). Cool and funny at first, it can get annoying with time. I personally turn it off when I am bored, simply by removing the second power cord.

Last but not least, the LCD TopGun is fairly lightweight (245 grams) and did not tire my arm excessively quick. All in all, it feels good enough and quite precise, I don't expect to blame a lot of my defeats onto the LCD TopGun in the future, except maybe for final boss confrontations, but that's just because I am dishonest in that context ;)

Two Players Action

While testing the LCD TopGun, I couldn't help disrupting the complete work premise. After a couple of minutes blasting and shouting "taste my steel, bitch!", I soon had friends. Indeed, for the first time in my sorry-ass career, my colleagues spoke to me, and I was surrounded by geeky hardcore gamers asking if "you could play co-op'". "Right on", I answered, feeling a confidence boost in my chest, after grabbing a second unit off its box.

We started going through the maze of cables and plugged everything together. Unlike what is said in the FAQs of the Chinglish web site of the product's manufacturer, one set of LED bars wouldn't recognize two LCD Topguns properly for us here. We really had to use two LED bars one next to each other, and that's where scotch tape became a requirement for this hands-on feature. We also needed to calibrate our blades accordingly, with the proper LED bar, each his turn. Once you've gone through this little hassle (a matter of 10 minutes tops), you're prepared for double trouble.

Moving on to the Bigger Screens

If everything went on without problems so far, the first complications are reached when bringing the action to a 42 inch screen, or larger. Putting the LED bars at both extremities of a widescreen HDTV, we faced difficulties reaching the far left and right, as well as the lowest part at the bottom of the screen. Taking steps back, then smaller steps forward, adjusting the distance while calibrating again and again, we finally got the stuff into place. In order to tackle the conflicts from the excessive span of your 16:9 ratio, the distance from which you stand to the screen is definitely the key factor: for 42 inches, 3.5 meters gave perfect results. At 2 meters or 2.5 meters from the 42'' monster, we could only play with 4:3 ratio. So keep trying until you are exactly where you are supposed to be and everything should be alright.

From 3 meters range, only 50 centimeters away from the perfect spot, we could play full-screen but with the LED bars slightly inside the screen and not completely at the extremities (this is actually the recommended technique from the manufacturer when facing gigantic screens over 50 inches, such as wall projectors and such). Using scotch tape to hold the LCD TopGun in place was enough to perform the stunt. Voila, we're playing with full accuracy on any screen ever since. Naturally, using scotch tape might leave traces on your beautiful television and you will need to clean up behind you. Of course, some will not call that perfection yet, it needs a bit of patience setting things up, and it's not the ideal set of circumstances you could think of. But, hey, that's much better than not being able to use any gun at all on my plasma, don't you agree?

TThe larger the screen gets, the farther you are supposed to stand away from it. We recommend making use of joypad extension leads to put yourself at ease, or even the use of a separate power source for the recoil function and/or for the LED stands (plug is standard and fits with these sockets you get with universal power supply - AC adapter output requirements are 600 mA or above, 5V, negative polarity on the outside). According to the text on the box, the LCD TopGun is compatible with screens sized between 14 and 60 inches in diagonal.

Playing with AME on PC

In the beginning, we simply installed the driver supplied in the box. Driver that, in some of the boxes we opened, comes on a simple CD-R on which has been hand-written TopGun v3.0 with a permanent marker. You gotta love Hong Kong for these personal touches on products. I would love Hong Kong even more if the drivers on the CD-R were working fine. That's not the case, I could not get anything out of it. It's only after a bit of research on the world wild web that I could get myself a winning freeware or two: Acorn's WinGun and Smog's Guncon2 driver. I went ahead and played a bit of Operation Wolf and the likes for hours, followed by a quick Duck Hunt on FCE-Ultra. So far playing 1up with the LCD TopGun has worked in every game that has been tried, while two players co-op mode is possible in some games, but not in others. I've been feeling like a teenager who had skipped school to go to the arcades again today ;)

By the way, I managed to play MAME with TFT, LCD and CRC monitors and, at the end of the day, I see no reason why the LCD TopGun wouldn't work with any homemade arcade cabinet running the emulator. Nintendo Wii gets software sales record http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=1161 Nintendo of America's VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway has announced that the Wii has already sold over 50 million units of software since its launch (18 months ago) and that the figure is a new record. The previous record, 42 million units sold in 18 months, was from the launch of the PlayStation 2 in late 2000. As a comparison, in the first 18 months of their lifecycles ,the Xbox 360 had 30 million units sold, 20 million were sold for the PlayStation 3 and 28 million were sold for the original Xbox. Making the figure even more impressive is that the figure does not include WiiSports which is bundled in every Wii console sold. The figure does however include "WiiPlay" (which comes bundled with a Wii remote) and "Link's Crossbow Training" (which comes bundled with the Wii zapper.) Sony believes that the attach rate of Move devices is about one for every six PlayStation3 consoles. Sony hopes that going forward sales of PS Move will get higher as more game developers adopt it for their incoming titles. At present, there are 85 games to support PS Move. According to Gabe Ahn, field developer support engineer at Sony Computer Entertainment America, "PS Move has been successful for Sony and the device remains important to the company". PS Move offers a realistic gaming experience for the PS3 system by fusing realistic, high-definition gaming along with accurate and easy-to-use controls. By incorporating the PlayStation Eye camera with PS Move, the user’s full range of motion is captured, resulting in ultimate control over how one plays the games, as well as the opportunity to project the player’s image into select games for new augmented reality experiences. Why get rid of the primary feature that set the 3DS apart from its portable and mobile gaming brethren? One likely reason is cost. That's £40 less than the basic 3DS and £70 less than the 3DS XL (and the newly reduced PlayStation Vita as well). The PS4 Screen Follows You http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=1204 We have known for a while that the PS4 will track both the controller, as well as the players face, since the consoles announcement in February. But during the GDC talk Play Station revealed some interesting news about the technology and how it will be used in game. An example of this is the old multiplayer split screen, now with the new technology splitting the screen will be aided with the tracking software. If a player moves left or right their ½ or ¼ of the screen will move with the player. The Xbox One Voice Recognition http://www.consolesandgadgets.co.uk/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsdesk_id=1205 With voice recognition all you can now simply turn on the Xbox One by walking over and talking to it.
